The sixth edition of Aliwal Urban Art Festival is here!

The Aliwal Urban Art Festival is an annual celebration of Singapore Art Week. Get down to a carefully-curated selection of art inspired by international street culture – from graffiti to graphic art, rock to afro-beat, skateboarding to breakdancing. Celebrate urban art and youth subcultures that live on the edge of modern society. From graffiti to graphic art, skateboarding to dance battles, and great music to get you moving, come as you are and soak in the good vibes!

Organised by Aliwal Arts Centre, the festival's location in Kampong Glam is apt - the district is named one of Singapore's coolest neighbourhoods by international press, with its rich history and culture, mixed with on-trend shops and cafes.

For its 2019 edition, SGMUSO curated the live music showcase, complementing the alternative vibes with 5 sets at the outdoor stage constructed at the Aliwal St carpark. Featuring independent bands across a variety of genres, attendees could groove to the smooth R&B tunes of Izat Ibrahim, indulge in the uplifting math-rock of hauste, or let loose to the hard-hitting music of Sun Eater. Funk and R&B group Astronauts capped off the night with their groovy sounds. This year’s lineup also featured a Malaysian act for the first time; Froya, whose style of music blends folk pop, electronica and other whimsical influences.

The music was as eclectic as the array of activities going on, with the music artists themselves being avid interdisciplinary subculture enthusiasts. As the sun went down, the lights and sounds from the outdoor stage were the beating heart of AUAF’s emphasis on celebrating subcultures and, more importantly, the independent and DIY ethos to do something different that drives it all.
